Effective 2026‑09‑20 · Applies to Recapture for Android and iOS

Recapture turns English phrases you capture — from screenshots, typed notes, or voice memos — into flashcards. This page explains exactly what the app stores, what it sends off your device, and to whom.

01What stays on your device

Every card you save — the phrase, its meaning, example sentences, tags, and your review history — lives in a local SQLite database inside the app. None of it is uploaded anywhere as part of normal use. There is no account, no login, and no profile — you never enter a name, email, or password anywhere in the app.

Uninstalling the app deletes this data permanently. There is no cloud backup unless your device's own OS-level app-data backup (Android auto-backup / iCloud) is enabled — that's between you and your device maker, not Recapture.

02What happens when you capture something

Recapture supports three ways to bring in a phrase, and each has a different data path:

03How your capture gets turned into a card

You choose how phrase extraction and enrichment (meaning, nuance, example sentences) are generated, in Settings. This choice determines where your captured text or screenshot is sent:

Default free, on by default

Your captured text or screenshot is sent to a Recapture-operated relay, which forwards it to one of a small pool of third-party AI providers (currently Google Gemini and Groq) to generate the card content, then returns the result to your device. The relay does not store your capture after the request completes.

To keep this free tier from being drained by scripts instead of real app users, each install is issued an anonymous device identifier (via Firebase Authentication's anonymous sign-in — no name, email, or personal info attached) and a device-attestation token (via Google Play Integrity on Android) sent with each request. Neither identifies you personally; both exist solely to confirm a request came from a real, unmodified copy of the app and to apply a fair-use limit per install.

Bring your own key your provider

Your captured text and API key are sent directly from your device to the AI provider you configured (OpenAI, Gemini, or Anthropic). Recapture never sees or stores your key on any server — it's kept in encrypted local storage on your device. Your data is subject to that provider's own privacy policy.

On-device local only, not yet available

Processed entirely on your phone using platform ML frameworks (ML Kit / Apple Intelligence). Nothing leaves the device. Not yet available in this build.

05Permissions the app requests

06Your choices

You can delete any card at any time from within the app. You can switch AI tiers, or remove a stored API key, from Settings at any time. Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data immediately, including the anonymous device identifier described above (a reinstall gets a new one).

If you have questions about how the default-tier relay handles a specific request, contact the developer using the details below.

07Changes to this policy

If Recapture's data practices change — for example, when on-device processing ships, or the pool of default-tier AI providers changes — this page will be updated and the effective date above will change accordingly.
